For two decades, RMI has partnered with MEBSH through our Food for Health program to nourish young minds across more than 40 schools in Haiti. In a country navigating extreme hardship, where millions face severe food insecurity, the simple promise of a daily meal is nothing short of a lifeline.

A study published in September 2026 by UNICEF, FAO, WFP, WHO and other nutrition partners, said “An estimated 253,725 children aged 6 to 59 months in Haiti are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition between June 2026 and May 2027, including nearly 94,000 with severe acute malnutrition…” Malnutrition is a serious problem and RMI continues to respond.
Across our partner schools, children are thriving both physically and academically. As many students openly share, “An empty stomach cannot learn. This is the only meal I get each day.” When children are fed, their minds are freed to focus, dream, and succeed. Recently, 95% of our eligible students passed their official government exams. This is a powerful testament to what happens when hunger no longer stands in the way of education.
For local families, the program offers relief in times of crisis. A father at one of our schools recently shared how much this support means to his family. While he deeply desires to provide for his children, prolonged droughts wiped out his entire crop harvest this year. Because Haitian farmers rely entirely on rainfall, missing rains mean lost crops and lost income. Knowing his children receive a hot, nutritious meal at school brings immense relief during an otherwise devastating season.
Pastor Paul Ronald Gedeon, leader of the Miserne Church in the Cance district, sees the impact firsthand:
“The hot lunch is a key factor in the school’s success. When there is no food, the kids have no desire to follow the teachers’ explanations… One thing I witness is that when the RMI truck arrives with food, even if the kids are in class, they all run out to help unload it… because they know it is for them.”
The Challenge We Face Today
While our mission remains unchanged, the logistical reality on the ground has shifted dramatically. Due to severe insecurity in Port-au-Prince, our primary shipping route became inaccessible. To safely deliver food, containers must now travel a much longer route from Cap-Haïtien to Les Cayes.
This rerouting has doubled our shipping and customs costs from $7,500 to $15,000 per container.
Because of this dramatic rise in transportation fees, RMI has had to make the painful decision to reduce our reach from 15,000 children to 10,000 children this year.
