In the community of Vieux-Bourg, Haiti, Jean Anaïka Stecie stands out. Bright, dedicated, and full of promise, Anaïka is one of the students in our HFKz program. One night in her 4th-grade year, her dedication to her education nearly cost her her life.
Like many students living in homes without electricity, Anaïka was studying her school lessons at around 7 PM by the light of a tèt gridap. This is a traditional Haitian kerosene lamp. As she focused on her books, her dress accidentally caught fire. Trapped in the flames, she couldn’t take the dress off in time, resulting in severe 3rd-degree burns.
Hearing her cries for help, her mother and older sister rushed into the room to extinguish the flames. While they saved her life, the damage was severe. Devastated and lacking the financial resources to afford critical medical care, Anaïka’s family had nowhere to turn. They reached out to RMI.
Our Hope for Kidz provides access to a major medical fund to help in situations like this. RMI immediately stepped in, facilitating her transport to a hospital in the Aquin area. Anaïka received the intensive treatment she urgently needed, and thanks to the generosity of our supporters, RMI covered the entirety of her medical bills.
Today, Anaïka is recovering, and her family is filled with overwhelming gratitude. They shared that without RMI’s swift intervention and financial backing, Anaïka likely would not have survived her injuries.
